The first post - a cold night - frigid - sidewalks lay like proud soldiers as the hordes of people trample on, hurrying to their destinations. The music tonight exists in the headphones attached to my digital piano. Too cold to go outside, and too much in my head to rest. The big question is, when will I go to my first session and report it. I will aim for at least one before the new year, but that is easier said then done. Of course, if I was out at one now I wouldn't have had this brilliant idea to blog about jamming. You know the saying, those who can - do, and those who can't - blog. But I must say I have spent much more of my life doing than blogging, so please bare with me, there might be a learning curve to my writing. I'm wearing heavy wool socks, and have yet to remove my sweater despite being home for 2 hours already. My apartment has a baby grand piano from 1942 that I got from a woman in Flushing who needed to return to China suddenly. So I got a deal. My thoughts will pour out faster than my vocabulary, and I will do my best to keep up while still attempting to inject the most descriptive words that I can. Lets commence the subject - I will create a list of the jam sessions that I know of or can find on the web:
Blue Note - Friday and Saturday nights, late, $5
Cleopatra's Needle (Cleo's) - every night, 2-4am
Kave-haus - Monday night, 11:30
Smoke - Monday and Thursday, 10pm
St. Nick's Pub - Monday night, midnight
Sweet Rhythm - not sure
Not a gigantic list - not a list that lives up to the towering history of jazz in this city. But a list that represents the current state of jazz, as possibly a cut throat, saturated music which sounds like the competitive atmosphere that surrounds it. But it is still a music I love, and I pledge to find out more and explore the world that fascinates and terrifies me.
